It’s been awhile.\u00a0 We’ve been literally inundated here at home.\u00a0 It’s been one thing after another, after another, ad nauseum.\u00a0 I had a foot injury.\u00a0 Then I had a tooth injury.\u00a0 Then some major dental work.\u00a0 In between all of that, the weather has toggled between sixty and one hundred, seventy and ninety, often with just days of each other.\u00a0 That’s made planting incredibly challenging.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In the midst of all that chaos, I decided, at the latest moment possible, to rip out all the raised beds.\u00a0 Food forest, here we come!\u00a0 After three years, I decided to wage all out war on the grass and make the move to permaculture.\u00a0 The beds were basically grass traps that took literally hours per bed to clean out of all the grass roots.\u00a0 With up to twenty raised beds, it made spring a nightmare of tedious and labor instensive grass battles and a giant waste of time.\u00a0 At least for me.<\/p>\n

I’ve grown resentful of how I imagined other gardners joyfully planting in the spring, while I hunkered down to spend months hunched over a garden bed digging up grass roots.\u00a0 By the time I got the beds ready for planting I was exhausted.\u00a0 Hubs was also not thrilled.\u00a0 To say the very least.\u00a0 Ha!<\/p>\n

No, I do not want gravel.\u00a0 We live in a neighborhood obsessed with weed free grass lawns and inedible landscapes.\u00a0 What that means for me is, that there are no less than five different landscape companies continuously in my neighborhood…for my immediate neighbors….who all have leaf blowers that blow all their junk into my yard that I’m trying to keep weed and grass free.\u00a0 Rocks and gravel would not be good for us.\u00a0 And I simply don’t like it.\u00a0 I like the way the earth feels under my feet.\u00a0 I can’t walk barefoot in gravel and rocks.<\/p>\n

My approach has, and always will be, cultivation and competition.\u00a0 If the weeds have too much competition, they won’t over run everything else.\u00a0 Proof is where the strawberries grow.\u00a0 They’ve out competed the weeds and we didn’t really have to do much.\u00a0 But that’s hard to do when assaulted with your neighbors weed seeds being blown into your space with a leaf blower.\u00a0 Infuriating.<\/p>\n
